Shopping Tips

Sunday – February 2, 2025 (Groundhog Day)

How, you may ask, does the featured photo relate to shopping tips? Well, we talked to an Argentine customs agent – Antonella – about places to shop in Ushuaia. She said the best store was Monte Olivia. So we started off to do some shopping and completely forgot what she had told us. Jan and I wanted to get long-sleeve t-shirts because the weather was much cooler than we have experienced at any of the ports since boarding in Marseille. We followed Antonella’s directions to Main Street and found 3 stores with merchandise we liked. It just so happened that the last store was Monte Olivia – the store she had recommended! She asked about our shopping when we returned to the ship and we could honestly say we did find it (by luck).

On the way to the shops we found several things of interest. There was a memorial to Juan and Eva Peron in a park not far from the pier. Across the street was a restaurant with a large window in the front through which you could see them grilling lamb – the whole lamb – stretched on frames and facing a wood fire. We also encountered a brightly-colored restaurant called Bar Ideal and a name from home “Hard Rock”. Most of the shopping for tourists takes place on this street – Avda San Martin. While the girls were shopping I found a building with interesting window boxes – a photo is included in today’s assortment. We discovered that usually most shops are closed on Sunday. Since our cruise ship was in town, some of them opened.

We returned to the ship for lunch in the L’Edera restaurant. Included are several photos of entrees (grilled vegetables with brie and mixed seafood) and desserts (some kind of tart and brownie bomb).

Following lunch we retired to our cabin for our yearly viewing of “Groundhog Day”. We forgot to pick up popcorn while in town so ate some of the fruit they deliver to our room each day. However, it just isn’t the same as popcorn.

Dinner wasn’t too long after the movie ended. There are several photos of entrees and desserts. Our table was 4 women and me. There has been a cold circulating among the passengers and Jeff has been out with it for a couple days. Don’t know where Leo and Mike were.

It doesn’t get dark here early – seems sunset is around 9:30 pm. That makes sense based on the latitude. So I went outside to see if I could get a few sunset photo. The sun cooperated by lighting up a section of the West side of Ushuaia.

Our entertainment tonight was a local group – Estudio Ballet Ushuaia. They performed dances from the area of Patagonia – quite different from Tango. We liked the video backgrounds they used while dancing. You’ll find many clips from this show. I believe they were booked last minute as we were not originally going to be staying overnight in Ushuaia.
