Robinson Crusoe

Tuesday – February 11, 2025

Today’s featured image is of an island renamed in 1966 to Robinson Crusoe Island. A Scottish sailor was marooned here from 1704 to 1709 and is believed to be the basis of Daniel Defoe’s book.

Today’s videos lead off with our World Cruise game of the day – “What time is it?”. Each team had a world map for reference. Luigi would ask for the time after naming a city. Some of the answers made no sense if you were actually using the map as a guide. There are several examples on video for you to watch. I believe our team finished last (again) due to some off-the-wall responses. At the end Luigi spun the wheel and announced the tomorrow’s game would be “Equilibrium”.

Following World Cruise games Jan (with Kelsey’s notes) took time to update her diary. Later in the afternoon Kelsey attended a show by the classical music group. This show featured the mezzo-soprano singing a variety of pieces.

Around 5:00 pm we began our approach to Robinson Crusoe Island. Our first view didn’t show the full breadth of the land so it was deceptive how large it actually became. There is a town on the Island and I assume it exists from income derived from fishing and/or tourism. Didn’t see any flat areas that could be cultivated and no hotels with over-the-water bungalows. As we sailed further West you could see the portion of the island that was hidden when viewing primarily from the North – it did stretch South a ways. Info I saw varies but the population is less than 1,000, land area less than 20 square miles, highest point is just under 1,000 feet and it would cost 38,000 Chilean pesos to fly from Santiago and takes just over an hour to reach San Juan Bautista. There are several still photos and a couple videos of our encounter with the island – and a time-lapse as we sailed away from it.

It was American Night in the restaurants. Subagia had an Uncle Sam hat that he eventually took off because it made his head too hot. I’ve included a few photos of the food from this evening’s menu. Tonight was also a birthday celebration for a 10 year old girl at a table next to ours. There is a video of the wait staff singing their version of “Happy Birthday”. Jeff noticed that the girl and her parents left without finishing the birthday cake. As Jeff is someone who does not squander resources, he thought it would be best if the remaining cake was used so he transferred it to our table. Kelly volunteered to taste test it before any of the rest of us ate cake. She did an excellent job and gave the “OK” for us to eat cake (I did have a piece and it was good). We returned the portion we did not eat so other tables might help dispose of what was left.

This evening’s show was titled “Simply The Best” and was a tribute to Tina Turner. You’ll find videos of the songs performed by the main stage group of four singers and eight dancers. The music was good as was the presentation.

Rounding out the media for today are a couple photos of the jigsaw puzzle on deck 7. Kelsey has been keeping an eye on the puzzles that have appeared on the lighted table and lets us know when they change and how much has been completed. There are no boxes left with the puzzle pieces so it has been difficult to determine the finished image. Jan found that several puzzles have a name in the margin and she looked on the Internet and found the image for two of the puzzles. Is that chaating? I don’t think so since we have always worked with the aid of at least the box for the puzzle.
