Birds!

Days at sea so far have been hard to tell apart – they all seem to be similar. What made today different was the appearance of birds soaring along the port side of the ship. We aren’t in any sense bird watchers so we didn’t know what type of birds we were watching. Fortunately on the way to dinner we happened to ask some passengers if they saw the birds – and they had. Then we asked if they knew what type they were and showed them some of our photos. They identified the birds in the photos as frigate birds and booby birds. We have seen both varieties when on the North coast of Kauai, Hawaii and didn’t make the connection to these. One of the photos I took held their interest – one of what appears to be a mostly brown-feathered booby with a blue beak. You can check out the birds in the photos from today here.

My attempt at a sunrise video didn’t work out well – the area was somewhat foggy so the camera couldn’t focus. The video is, as a result, not in focus and not worth posting. I did combine our position from the compass in my phone with the local temp. We have crossed the equator so now we are in the Southern hemisphere.

Didn’t have any World Cruise game today so we decided to eat lunch in the L’Edera dining room. There are a few photos of our lunch choices. The best one I made was the dessert – Caribbean Sundae. It had a chunk of pineapple with pineapple ice cream and a wafer stuck in the top.

During the afternoon is when the birds appeared. Not sure where they came from because we aren’t close to any land at present. The bird photos are labeled so you can tell which are frigate birds and which are booby birds.

One can only experience the thrill of frigates and boobys for so long so we broke off viewing and went to dinner. Pictured are some of our starters, entres and desserts. The chicken starter with dip was very good.

This evening’s entertainment was the Reader’s Digest version of Carmen. It was sung in French so we couldn’t follow along but did know the plot after our teaching session on Thursday. When Carmen was stabbed there was no blood and unlike the production staged in 2018, Carmen did not turn the tables on Don Jose by shooting him with a gun. Included in today’s photos/videos are several clips from the production.

Finishing our tour of the ship today we have included photos from decks 13, 14 and 15. Kelsey’s favorite deck is probably 13 because it houses the buffet! One of the photos shows her making a Caitlin Clark shot on the basketball court.

Tomorrow is our last day at sea before arrival in Salvador, Brazil. Don’t know what is in store but we assume it will be more pleasant sailing with almost-too-hot temperatures.
