Far From Home

Thursday – April 24, 2025

When at sea I sometimes run out of things to do. Today is an example. I was playing with the MAPS app on the phone and found that at that time we were almost exactly the number of miles from home as there are feet in a mile – 5,280. That is why you see today’s featured photograph. I think I need a reset by sticking a fork in an electrical socket!

The day started before sunrise with thunder and lightning. I set up the camera to take a time-lapse but didn’t capture either (wouldn’t have recorded the sound but I thought at least 1 strike of lightning). You can see that it is raining in the distance but that is about all.

World Cruise game today was to use a straw to pick up a coffee bean and walk it over to a table across the deck and deposit the bean in a cup – all the time with hands behind back. I made another time-lapse so you can see all four teams in less than 30 seconds. Fire won with 23 beans in the cup – Air had 5. Tomorrow’s game was identified as catapult. We will probably miss that game because we received an invitation to join the captain and others in the theatre at game time. The invite reads “…to thank you for choosing MSC again…”. So, we’ll see what that is all about.

We had lunch on deck 13 at the buffet. On the way back to the cabin I saw large sections of the water covered with brown-orange stuff. I took a couple photos you will find in today’s media. Did some checking and found this is called sargassum. This stuff is so plentiful there is a sea without boundaries that contains this material. The Sargasso Sea is an area of the Atlantic Ocean slightly North and West of our current location, but since it has no boundaries, it could have shifted to show the sargassum I photographed. Be still my beating heart – all this seaweed talk is making me dizzy!

Included today are a few photos of meal selections. Didn’t have a menu to label them with their “official” names but I think the descriptions you read are close enough.

This evening we had a reprise from Big Gospel Choir performing hit songs form Motown Records. For the last song they also included the Magnifica Choir. One of the Magnifica soloists was Peter – the man from Melbourne, Australia, you may remember has a shirt almost like one of Kelsey’s hoodies (bright colors with palm trees). Big Gospel Choir did a great job with the songs they presented. The 2 male singers from the ship’s production crew (4 singers, 8 dancers) were sitting 2 rows in front of us and they were definitely into the Motown songs – lots of clapping and head swinging to the beat of the music.

Tomorrow is our last day at sea before reaching Dakar, Senegal. Our excursion there will be a trip to a game preserve with no large predators. Sounds like this time we may get closer to the animals than our excursion to Addo Elephant Park in South Africa.
