Winners!

Friday – January 31, 2025

OK – the day wasn’t a winner (you’ll see why later) but Kelsey and Karen were! Today’s featured photo shows the award presentation for a movie trivia contest both entered and won late in the evening. 8 video clips from movies were shown and the contestants had to correctly identify all 8 by writing them on a slip of paper and turning the slip in to the judges. Of the more than 50 (don’t know the actual number who played), 8 correctly identified the 8 movies. Kelsey was the first name called followed by Karen. They each won shipboard credits that can be applied to gifts at the end of the cruise. Congratulations!

Today’s sunrise was beautiful as you’ll see when you watch the video. However, the weather was not acceptable to the ship’s command staff due to high winds and rain. Because we would be at tender (anchor off shore) at Port Stanley and there were strong winds making both anchoring and tendering passengers to shore unsafe, the captain announced at 8:00 am that we would not be visiting Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. The itinerary was changed so we will be at our next port – Ushuaia, Argentina – a day early (February 2nd) and stay overnight. We were disappointed but watching the weather as we sailed West it became obvious that was the correct decision. Included you will see some indications of the bad weather – temperatures and photos of the overcast and rainy skies.

If you wanted a chair around the pool, today was your day! There was no-one in the pool area due to the cold (relatively) temperatures and the strong wind. Jan & Kelsey chose to stay inside and play cards. I listened in on a “Teams” video conference concerning TRACERS with University personnel. We went for a snack at the buffet then did I-don’t-know-what until it was time for dinner. Everyone on the ship was wearing warm weather clothing today and looking for places that didn’t have outside access to keep out of the wind. By late afternoon the temp had not increased – felt like mid-40’s.

There are a couple photos of meal items from dinner. The fried shrimp was good as was the oriental chicken stir-fry and Black Forest cake dessert.

This evening’s entertainment was selections from opera – L’Elisir D’Amore. It is a humorous story about love, a confidence man and a magic potion. Can’t tell you what is being said because the lyrics are not English. The presentation by both singers and musicians was great. There are several videos for you to see for yourself.

The day concluded with the movie trivia contest in the same bar where Kelsey won a prize during our “trial” cruise in December of 2023. Guess she needs to spend more time there!

We have a day at sea Saturday then arrive at Ushuaia on Sunday. Since we’ll have an extra day in Ushuaia we need to listen to the excursions being offered for that second day. I believe there is a discussion session Saturday to explain those. We also have to present ourselves to customs control to confirm the validity of our New Zealand and Australian visas on Saturday in the early afternoon,

You’ll find today’s videos and photos here.
